| There is
no band on earth quite like the almost-big-band
led by Danish guitarist Pierre Dørge. His
New Jungle Orchestra does refer a lot to Duke Ellington’s
kind of “jungle music”, but they go
forward & back in time , across genres &
cultures, “inside” & “out”
in the most delightful, surprising ways. “Live
at Birdland” is a superb recording. The NJO's
grit, groove-manship, humour & oomph are the
match of any American outfit, but the NJO's sensibility
is definitely European & rather more worldly
than any prominent American jazz orchestra's. |
